WHISTLING CHEERFULLY to himself, Cosimo methodically packed his overnight bag. There was a sharp knock at his cabin door.

“Come in ,” he called out, turning around to see his father stride casually inside throwing a small box up and down, and then catching it with his hand.

“Papa, what a surprise.”

“I thought so. Here,” he said, tossing the box toward Cosimo. “I thought you may need these.”

Opening the leather case, Cosimo took a sharp breath inward. Nestling on maroon velvet, were two identical wedding bands, engraved with the Deyna family crest. Worn, yet still sturdy, these rings had stood the test of time. He shot a look at his father’s hand.

“Papa, are these yours and Mama’s wedding rings?”

“Si. I removed mine when I saw you and Anne together.”

“Why do you carry Mama’s around?”

“I was going to give the ring to Helena, but I forgot and now you and Anne are married, you should wear them.”

“Papa, it was not a legal ceremony, remember?” Cosimo protested. Acting on impulse, he slid the larger band on his finger. It had been so long since he’d worn a wedding ring, yet part of him felt as if it belonged there.

“While Anna is on board the ship, she is the captain’s wife and therefore should wear a symbol of such. Give it to her. Let her borrow it until the cruise ends.” Armando insisted. “Enjoy your night off, Son.”

“Grazie, Papa. Ciao,” he replied, slipping back into the Italian language of his country as his father exited his cabin. He sat down on his bunk and regarded the ring on his finger, stopping himself from removing it and wondering why it was important Anne accept him.

She had no idea that the villa arranged for her ‘night alone,’ was owned by him. If she wanted a night to remember, then he would give her that night and perhaps it would lead to more.
